2016-2017 Season Recap

Posted: Mar 8, 2017

Over the past few weeks 5 of our teams finished out the season with a bang. From the 2017 Skate Canada National Championships in Calgary to March Mania in Newmarket, Gold Ice teams represented strongly in all categories.

Gold Ice Novice and Open headed to Calgary, Alberta February 24th – 26th to compete in the 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships. The Winsport arena at Canada Olympic Park is an absolutely stunning facility and all 35 Gold Ice skaters enjoyed performing their programs here one last time.

Battling injuries, the Open team skated with grit and determination. They entertained the Calgary audience with their country themed program. This passionate group of skaters gave it their all and finished in 4th place just off the podium. We are proud of all of you for your achievements this season and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Taking advantage of the location, the Novice team kicked off their trip with a day trip to Banff. From gondolas, mountains, shopping, and sleigh rides, it was a lovely day for all. How lucky are we to live in such a beautiful country?

Overcoming difficulties in both skates with two solid performances, Gold Ice Novice confirmed themselves as one of the top teams in the country with a 5th place finish for the second year in a row.

The following weekend Gold Ice Beginner 2, Elementary, Juvenile, and Adult 3 headed to Newmarket to compete in the always fun March Mania competition.

Making strides at every competition entered this season, Gold Ice Beginner 2 moved up one more notch on the podium to finish 2nd and earn the silver medal overall. This very young group of skaters have worked incredibly hard this season to improve as a team. They have made friendships that will last a lifetime and we are excited to see how far their journey will take them.

Excited to show off their space themed program for the last time, Gold Ice Elementary had two of their best skates of the season. (And they even did so with two broken wrists on the team!) In a very tough field they once again claimed the bronze medal. Way to go astronauts on a wonderful season. You truly were out of this world!

Ready to redeem themselves after some bumps in the road at Regionals, Gold Ice Juvenile skated with passion and heart. They were turning heads with their increased speed and energetic expressions. A seasons best score put them on top of the podium again with a gold medal. This season brought the Juvenile team 3 gold medals and two silver medals – congratulations on this incredible accomplishment!

Gold Ice Adult 3 earned their first medal of the year with two very solid performances of their Deck of Cards theme. With a silver medal around their necks, they head into their last competition of the season, the Skate Ontario Adult Invitational, at the end of the month.

Gold Ice is looking forward to cheering on our Canadian Junior teams this weekend for the ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships being held at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.
