It may have been freezing outside, but the atmosphere in Herbert H Carnegie Centennial Arena this past weekend was on fire.
Gold Ice teams skated with passion and determination, and all 7 teams finished within the top 5 in their respective categories. This is a huge success and we are extremely proud of all of our skaters for their hard work leading into this weekend.
The first Gold Ice team to hit the ice was our Elementary Astronauts. They have been working hard in a very short time to make improvements to their space themed program. Their efforts paid off with two fantastic skates and a bronze medal out of 17 teams. This is a huge improvement from missing out on qualifying for the gold final only a few short weeks ago. Gold Ice Elementary teams have stood on the podium at the Ontario Championships for the past 5 seasons – what an achievement!
Next up, Gold Ice Juvenile was eager to showcase their energetic Firefighters themed program again. Uncharacteristically, there were some very unfortunate falls in both skates. Determined, the skaters did not give up and sold the program from start to finish to earn the silver medal for the second year in a row.
Gold Ice Novice were perhaps the most excited to compete this weekend and perform their “remixed” Big Band program. A fast paced, high energy first skate rocketed the team to a huge seasons best score and confirming that all the hours of overtime practice these past few weeks were well worth it. They came home with their second consecutive Ontario Regional Silver Medal. The team is already back at it working hard to prepare for the 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships in Calgary next week.
Always entertainers, the Open team were thrilled to skate their Country Girl program on Ontario Ice for the last time. The audience was stomping along with them to every beat of the music. An even more energetic second skate earned them a seasons best score of 86.27. The Open team is also very excited to perform this program in Calgary at the National Championships next week.
Excited for their second competition of the season, Gold Ice Beginner 2 showed off some of the biggest smiles we’ve ever seen. They had lots of fun performing for the audience at Herbert H Carnegie Centennial arena. Two solid and clean skates moved them up a spot from Synchro Capers earning them the bronze medal overall!
Eclipse Adult 1 once again entertained the crowd with their throw-back Boy Bands program. They had some missteps in the first skate but came back flying in the second skate. They are proud of their 5th place finish in a very strong category. We would like to congratulate this team on a very successful season!
Gold Ice Adult 3 has improved leaps and bounds from last season and skated to a 5th place finish out of 13 teams in Ontario just narrowly missing out on a medal.
Thank you to all of the volunteers and officials for your time and dedication to our sport. It is because of your tireless efforts that our athletes are able to participate in a sport they love so much. Congratulations on all teams for your wonderful performances this weekend.
