Gold Ice Novice and Open travelled to Burnaby, BC last month for the 2014 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships. It was a beautiful week in BC with spring like temperatures in February we aren’t used to here in Ontario. After a season of hard work and dedication, these 33 skaters were excited to show Canada what they were made of.
The Novice team bounced back from a few down falls in the first skate to have a clean second skate and finish on a strong note. These girls have come very far this season and found success winning 2 bronze medals throughout the season with a 4th place finish at Regionals and a 9th place showing at nationals.
Ready to compete for the top spot, Gold Ice Open came out with a strong first skate but encountered a few technical difficulties that left them in third, 6 points behind the second place team. Not ones to be defeated, the team came back ready to fight for it in the second skate. They did just that, nailing down their best of the season rewarded with a record breaking 90.08 points (11 points higher than their first skate). This was enough to win the silver medal overall.
One of the highlights of the Open competition was again the team spirit showed by our fans. They surprised the team with fully decked out 80s aerobics gear and some pre-skate workouts in the stands.
Both teams went on to celebrate in BC, the Novice team headed to the Capilano Suspension Bridge before a fancy dinner out at the Cactus Club Cafe in downtown Vancouver. The Open team enjoyed dinner at the Yaletown Brewpub in Vancouver.
The coaching staff would like to thank all skaters for their dedication and hard work over the season. Special thanks goes out to our team managers for their tireless volunteering to ensure our teams are organized and able to focus on their skating. Thanks also to parent volunteers for all of your help throughout the season. We couldn’t do it without you!
Congrats to our Novice and Open teams on a fabulous season!
Both teams will enjoy a few weeks off before auditions start on March 19th. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
